Enjoy a two-day excursion to southern Tunisia and spend a fantastic night in a Berber tent in the middle of the Tunisian desert!
You'll be picked up in the morning from your hotel and will head towards the south of Tunisia. You'll cross the Roman causeway, a bridge that links Djerba Island to the rest of the country. You'll take a break at the salt lake of Chahbania, also called the "salt desert", before heading to the famous Berber town of Tataouine. You can stroll through its centre and explore its market.
Afterwards, you'll go to Chenini, a Berber troglodyte town. Perched on top of a hill, this town has gorgeous views of the surroundings! A local guide will be waiting for you and give you a tour of the town. The itinerary includes a visit to its old mosque, oil mill and famous granaries. After an hour or so's walk, you'll be served lunch.
After lunch, you'll get back on the road and follow a stony trail (known as a "reg") through the desert. You'll continue until you reach the Ksar Guilane oasis situated in the middle of magnificent sand dunes where the Grand Erg Oriental begins. You'll then have some free time when you can enjoy a dip in the hot springs, or, for an extra charge go on a camel or quad bike ride.
Afterwards, you'll head to the encampment, where you can admire the sun setting on the dunes. You'll be able to see how sand bread is prepared (bread baked under the embers) and then enjoy dinner before spending the night in the tent.
Breakfast will be served the following morning. You'll then get back on the road and head to the town of Matmata, famous for its underground houses. The lunar landscape may well seem familiar and for good reason too! This town was used as a set for the famous Star Wars films! A Berber family will welcome you for a visit to their troglodyte home where you can enjoy a lovely cup of tea. Lunch will later be served at the troglodyte hotel, which was also a Star Wars location.
On the way back, you'll stop at the town of Toujane where you can admire a panoramic view of the surroundings. Then you'll be taken back to your hotel on Djerba Island.
