Petra, the capital of the Nabataean Empire from 400 to 106 BC, is full of archaeological sites attesting to the lives and beliefs of its inhabitants. Throughout the tour, you'll have a private guide to teach you all there is to know about the thousand-year-old city.
You'll arrive at the main gate of Petra, the starting point of your walking tour.
Cross the Sîq, a path amidst the ochre and red walls of the canyon measuring several tens of meters tall. This path will lead you to all the sites of Petra. Stop off to see the Djinn blocks. These tombs were believed to be inhabited by spirits. During your tour, you'll also see the Obelisk Tomb, the Petra Dam, and the Dark Tunnel. Following the path of the Sîq, you'll arrive at the most famous site in Jordan, the Khazneh. The monument, which translates as The Treasury, is 43 metres high and 28 metres wide. It is said to have been built around the 1st century AD by the Nabataeans to hide the supposed treasure of a pharaoh. You'll also see Petra Theater, which was built over 2,000 years ago with a layout mirroring that of Greco-Roman amphitheatres.
During this tour, you'll get the chance to step inside the Tomb of the Urnand the Byzantine Church. The Tomb of the Urn is one of four Royal Tombs along with the Silk Tomb, the Corinthian Tomb, and the Palace Tomb. Within the Byzantine church, Built in the 5th century AD, you can marvel at the superbly preserved mosaics.
At the end of your tour, you can also explore the temple of Qasr el Bint, or the palace of Pharaoh's daughter in Arabic. Despite the name, this temple was actually a sanctuary dedicated to the gods of the Nabataeans.
